Charles Gluskoter
thrown and hand-built stoneware pottery
The ceramic vessels I am building have their roots in functional forms, but have evolved to be far more textural and sculptural. I create most of the pieces by combining slab building and throwing techniques in each piece. The slabs are pounded with various tools to achieve their texture. Many of the vessels are carved with intricate designs. The glazes I use are rough, dry, and metallic in character.
I am also exploring some pieces that are the very opposite of these stoneware vessels. They are pit-fired, burnished pots which have been carved. These pieces have no glaze, but have a soft, smooth feel to them. It is this diversity in clay potential that I find so intriguing.
